The Homeless Deserve Better–No New Shelter on Addison Road
Prince George’s County is proposing the construction of a new 30,000-55,000 square foot homeless shelter on Addison Road. We believe that this proposed site is not feasible for many reasons, and does not adequately support the homeless community in our area.
- The site has a lack of walkable employment opportunities
- This site is a federally-designated Medically Underserved Area
- This site is within a federally-designated low-income area
The proposed location is also situated in the middle of five residential neighborhoods and will directly impact 300 homeowners. With a shelter already located on Addison Road, this proposed site is bad policy.
We all agree that a new homeless shelter is necessary, and we support the county’s efforts to provide needed housing and resources to the homeless community. However, we strongly disagree with the proposed location for the reasons stated above, and encourage the county to seek a location that makes more sense for all involved.
