Earlier this month, you might have received an email from Scenic America urging your support for SB 557, and we wanted to tell you a bit more about this proposed legislation, which is specific to our state, Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania State Senate is considering SB 557, a measure that would keep billboards away from schools, parks, and churches – at least 1,000 feet away. Imagine if we could limit the visual blight of billboards and advertising away from these important community focal points!
Just as exciting is that this legislation would also limit outdoor advertising companies’ ability to construct new billboards in communities throughout southwestern Pennsylvania and the rest of the state. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Carolyn Comitta (Chester County) and Sen. Wayne Fontana (Allegheny County).
Scenic Pittsburgh and Scenic America both support this legislative action, and we will continue to work towards its passage in both the PA Senate and eventually we hope, the House as well. The only way we can resist the billion-dollar billboard industry is through the law – so passing this kind of legislation is key to keeping Pennsylvania scenic, and safe.
