Major Highlights from the 2023-2024 Annual Report

Landmark Gift Propels National Advocacy

Ronald Lee Fleming’s historic $1 million gift to Scenic America reinforced his lifelong commitment to preserving America’s scenic beauty. This transformative contribution enabled the launch of national communications campaigns and bolstered advocacy efforts, positioning Scenic America at the forefront of scenic conservation.

Billboard Reduction and Policy Wins

Scenic America recorded a 7% reduction in billboards along state routes, reflecting the removal of nearly 20,000 billboards since 2019. This success stems from steadfast advocacy and legal victories defending the Highway Beautification Act. Notably, Scenic America thwarted multiple attempts by the outdoor advertising industry to weaken billboard restrictions in Congress.

National Scenic Byways Funding Secured

Through tireless advocacy, Scenic America helped secure $7.5 million in federal funding for the National Scenic Byways Program for FY24—marking four consecutive years of congressional support. These funds will help preserve iconic roadways and fuel local economic development through tourism.

Utility Undergrounding for Safety and Beauty

Scenic America expanded its utility undergrounding initiatives in partnership with industry leaders like PG&E and Dominion Energy. By advancing innovative technologies and securing regulatory approvals, the organization is reducing wildfire risks, enhancing grid reliability, and protecting America’s natural views through the undergrounding of overhead power lines.

Expanding Strategic Partnerships

Collaborations with BMW North America and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) boosted Scenic America’s conservation footprint. The “Trees for Test Drives” campaign resulted in 30,000 trees planted in fire-damaged areas, while a partnership with BLM enhanced byways mapping capabilities and promoted sustainable tourism.

Local Chapter Success Stories

Local chapter organizations achieved remarkable victories, including:

  • Scenic Los Angeles: Blocking major digital billboard expansion projects.
  • Scenic Pittsburgh: Transforming underutilized city spaces into green public parks.
  • Scenic Missouri: Expanding the Ozark Run Scenic Byway by 257 miles.
