We believe that scenic beauty is for everyone.
Scenic America affirms its commitment to preserving and enhancing scenic beauty, and to creating a scenic America for all people and all communities. To fulfill this purpose, we commit to promoting these principles through our work. We will strive to reflect these values in our governance, our administration, our partnerships, and our strategic operations and programs.
Scenic America will work to ensure that all Americans have access to, and conservation of, scenic beauty, and to ensure that all Americans are recognized as stakeholders and participants in scenic conservation decision-making processes.
We believe that all Americans deserve to enjoy scenic beauty in the places they live, work, and travel, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, disability, age, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

Our Work Promotes Scenic Beauty for All
Our advocacy and program efforts regarding scenic byways, outdoor advertising control, parks and open spaces, and utilities undergrounding and infrastructure upgrades all present key opportunities to promote scenic beauty for all people and communities.

Byways Bring Us Together
Because a scenic byways designation has a positive influence on a broad area around a roadway, it can be a powerful tool to advance the goals of scenic conservation for entire communities and regions. Scenic byways highlight the historical and cultural contributions of diverse communities. They recognize the scenic value of underserved and historically excluded communities, and they offer economic growth opportunities to marginalized peoples and regions, including rural communities which may lack other opportunities.

Blight Affects Communities Unequally
Communities with fewer resources—whether urban, suburban, or rural—have often borne the brunt of billboard blight. These areas may lack the tools or support needed to challenge billboard proliferation, making them more vulnerable to visual pollution that can lower property values and limit economic growth. The continued spread of digital billboards brings added concerns like scenic degradation, light pollution, and traffic safety risks. By advocating against excessive signage and expanding access to opposition tools and information, we can help all communities protect their local character and quality of life.

We All Need Parks and Open Spaces
Protecting and promoting parks and open spaces ensures more Americans can experience the scenic beauty of our country. Scenic America supports expanding access to green spaces in communities that have historically had limited opportunities to enjoy them, while also advocating for placemaking efforts that enhance local character and quality of life. Walkable access to parks and natural areas contributes to better public health outcomes and a stronger sense of community. We are also committed to safeguarding national parks and other ecological treasures and ensuring that everyone has safe, welcoming, and equitable access. These public lands are part of our shared heritage, and through education and outreach, we aim to help all people enjoy and appreciate their beauty.

Expanding Access to Undergrounding
Infrastructure planning decisions have contributed to unequal access to safe, reliable, and visually appealing utility systems, with overhead wires disproportionately concentrated in many under-resourced communities. Historically, undergrounding projects have been more common in areas with greater financial means, leaving other neighborhoods behind. Scenic America advocates for expanded government support and improved technical standards to make undergrounding more accessible across all communities. These efforts enhance public safety, strengthen utility reliability, and support long-term economic growth in areas that stand to benefit most.

We’re Leading the Fight Against Blight
The negative impacts of scenic blight—such as billboards, overhead wires, and poorly planned development—are often felt most acutely in communities that already face a range of environmental and economic challenges. Scenic America believes that no community should bear the added burden of visual pollution. Promoting equity and broad access to scenic beauty is central to our mission and informs every aspect of our work.
Our Commitment
Scenic America is committed to ensuring that all people have access to communities and landscapes that are healthy, vibrant, and inspiring. These values shape the policies we champion and the partnerships we build, as we work to protect and enhance the visual character of places across the country.
